As we enter 2025, some of the UK’s leading supermarkets have kickstarted the year with a range of savings to beat the January pinch.
The deals come as according to IGD CEO Sarah Bradbury, while some shoppers opted to treat themselves by trading up this Christmas, “with the economic outlook for 2025 remaining relatively weak, and with households facing the prospect of rising bills, this shopper behaviour could be short-lived.”
From price cuts to Aldi and Lidl Price Match expansions and £1 meals, we round up which grocers are offering New Year deals, what the savings are and which products are included.
Asda is cutting prices on more than 2,500 household staples as part of a New Year price-lowering campaign.
Dubbed the ‘Big Jan Price Drop’, the supermarket giant is offering an average 26% discount across products in-store and online for the month.
Items featured in the campaign include branded products such as Cathedral City Mature Cheddar, Dolmio Bolognese Sauce, and Persil Wonder Wash, as well as own-brand items such as Asda’s whole chicken and salmon fillets.
Asda chief customer officer David Hills said: “We know that as we come out of the festive period, budgets can be a concern for many families.
“Our Big Jan Price Drop aims to ease that burden and make money stretch further for our customers, by reducing the prices of the products they’re buying week in, week out, continuing to offer uncompromising value to all.”
Morrisons is expanding its Aldi and Lidl Price Match to include over 500 everyday essentials and best-sellers in stores and online.
As of 1 January, new additions such as olive oil, coffee, eggs, single cream and pasta sauce joined the hundreds of existing items already available in the supermarket chain’s Price Match, including bananas, potatoes, broccoli and onions.
As it continues its commitment to British farming, staples such as 100% British beef mince, chicken fillets and locally sourced carrots were also included, alongside semi-skimmed milk, rice, cheese, and tins of chopped tomatoes.
Morrisons head of price Gareth Lloyd said: “We’re starting 2025 by doubling down on value for our customers. Expanding our Price Match means more of the essentials and brands customers love at the prices they expect, with the quality they trust from Morrisons.
“This builds on the savings and rewards we’ve introduced throughout the year – from price cuts to better deals for our More Card members. It’s all about helping shoppers get more for their money.”
